With Emma being in school now, I have been extra motivated to get organized myself. For instance, I had so much fun going school supply shopping, I felt like I was 10 again. I started filling our cart with pencils and crayons and markers and erasers and watercolor paint. Then I remembered that the only school supply Emma needed was a book bag. Darn. But I still bought all of those things anyway. So now that I have these supplies I am determined to use them here at home with the kids.
When it comes to crafts, I usually copy ideas that I find online. I like to be creative, but I find that with my "mom brain" I am not often that original.
One day I was playing hopscotch with Emma and I had an idea of using a similar format for teaching my kids to pray the rosary. Being a catechetics major, I am all about trying to find fun and creative ways to teach my children the faith.
So I pulled together a white paper roll, paint, and brushes. I printed off 10 small pictures of Mary, one of the Holy Trinity, and one of God the Father. Then we got to work. We rolled out the banner paper and I outlined one decade of the rosary and then the kids helped me paint in the beads (or circles). We glued the pictures next to each bead to help teach them which prayer comes next. There were moments where I wished I had waited to do this project until they were asleep, but then I reminded myself that the messy marks are what makes it beautiful and then they are proud of what they had done. Once we were finally done painting and I still had some hair left, I set it out to dry. When it was dry I covered it with laminate(this was the most expensive part of the project, but I think it will be worth it in the end).
When Dan got home that night, the kids were so excited to show him what we had done and then we prayed together. The kids held their rosaries and and after each Hail Mary they would move their fingers to the next bead and jump onto the next circle. I keep saying "they" but in reality, Emma does all of this and Kolbe sometimes follows and sometimes just runs or rolls around(the laminate was def. worth it) But that's great. He has fun and he randomly copies the prayers that we say.
So there you have it. A Johnson family craft that will hopefully turn into a fun little tradition. So far so good. ;)
Lauren, I LOVE this!! And i love the your blog's new look, so so cute! I really want to try this with the girls, how did you cover the whole thing with laminate? Great idea!!
Thank you! I am slowly figuring out how to style my blog :)
For the laminate I had to buy two laminating rolls at office depot. THe bummer was that they were $13 each. I wasn't expecting to pay that much, and I bet there are cheaper deals out there. But hopefully we will be able to use it for many years to come!
That's a great idea! kids need that visual to learn and we've been struggling teaching our 4 yr old how to use the beads. :)
Okay this is seriously so cool! Great idea, definitely going to put something like this together for my little guys - found your blog through Ana's. :)
darling idea. i think i'll make this as a gift for my Godchildren. i plan to use a canvas paint drop cloth. i'll be certain to post pictures after i gift them (3-4).

I love the idea of the drop cloth! Might have to try that out one day too, depending on how long ours lasts!
I would definitely suggest the drop cloth or look in your town and see if there is a teacher support center. We have a place called GLRS (Georgia Learning Resource Service) and we can laminate for 33 cents per foot. I want to make one of these with my REP class now!
I just found this post through Pinterest and I have to tell you, this is the most awesome Catholic craft for kids that I have found in a LONG time. I am so excited to do something like this with my kiddos, as I know they will LOVE it! Thank you!!
I love this, but I will be completely honest ... how exactly does it work?! I would love to do it with my CCD class (2nd grade) in this, the month of the rosary, but am not sure I'm understanding correctly. Are there spaces for each individual prayer (as many as beads)? Or do they not move until they have said all 10 Hail Marys?
I love this idea, but also would like to have some information on how to do it with my Sunday School class. I am planning on doing an edible rosary with them next week and thought this hopscotch would be fun to do with them as well.
I am sorry, I just saw your comment! We just use it to pray one decade at a time. So they stand on the our father circle, then the 10 Hail Mary circles and then the glory be. My kids have short attention spans, so getting through that one decade all we can manage now. :)
This is a wonderful idea! Where did you get it laminated? And how expensive was it? I'm thinking this would be perfect for my first grade class. I'll have to check over on Lena's to see if how they turned out on a drop cloth.
love the idea of dropcloth. I found you on Pinterest, an my first thought was wouldn't this be great for Stations of the Cross?
AWESOME!! Thanks for posting this! Keep up the good work of planting seeds of Faith in your children! They will never forget it!
What a wonderful idea!!! I was going through different sites to come up with new ideas to teach my first grade catechism class!! I thought this was so precious!! God bless you and your lovely family!! Julie Costello, Pueblo, CO
Holaaa! Es una hermosa idea. Gracias por compartirla. Lo pondré en práctica en el jardín de infantes donde trabajo.
This is a fabulous idea and I am so excited to have found this on Pinterest! I am a new catechist teaching first graders and I know they will LOVE doing this project.
Hi! I LOVE this! I didn't read all of the other comments, but you may want to consider doing this (or other similar things) on a cheap shower curtain from the dollar store. I have a computer keyboard and number pad (to practice getting familiar with where the letters are on a keyboard and number pad) drawn on shower curtains... the only problem is that it slips around some, but I imagine your paper probably does, too (?)... Anyway... thanks for sharing! I am going to make one of these ASAP! I'm not sure how I'll paint the beads... maybe I'll just draw the outlines with different colored sharpie's... THANK YOU!
Hi Lauren! I stumbled across your site when I was searching for Blessed Mother preschool activities. When I saw your photo I totally recognized you from FUS Little Flowers Household. Your family is sooo beautiful!! It is wonderful to see you living out your faith as a momma!
God Bless, Sarah ( Strathmann) Zych
